Makeup… our self decoration. Skincare… the ritual of it. There is something so personal, familiar and self loving about the way we apply our products. As an eco-makeup artist and self-branding coach, I’m huge into self love. All year around. And this month, especially, with the days of uber-dry winter skin, our Canadian snow-ins, and red and pink Valentine’s Day hearts everywhere.
For serious self care, you can’t match well-formulated green-beauty products made in small batches. Here, in Canada, we’ve recently started to see more sophisticated, beautiful products made locally by ethical indie companies. I’m excited to share some of my favorite clean and cruelty-free Canuck finds that I’m so proud to keep in my kit and recommend to clients.

Healthy skin is one thing makeup tries to recreate. The more love you’re giving your skin, the less you “need” make up. Besides eating nutritious, organic foods and drinking loads of water, choose your skincare products well. This is all the more important during the winter, when skin becomes parched and dull and there’s little sun to coax out a glow.
Take some time for yourself, guilt free, to treat your skin to a nourishing complete-care routine using high-quality, non-toxic products. Graydon Skincare, an established eco-staple out of Toronto, is a Canadian-made brand I cannot recommend enough. I’m in love with their Face Food Mineral Mist. I use it on clients as a buildable spritzer. Its fine, even mist is perfect to prep skin for makeup. And, if I do make a whoopsie at makeup time (hey, it happens), the Keto Cleanse makes removing the errant makeup easy and it smells like coconut-deliciousness heaven!

Adorning yourself with cosmetics can be the ultimate in self-appreciation. It’s a time for you to really look at yourself, acknowledge what you like, and then enhance it. I enjoy seeing friends get ready to go out, watching how particular they are with their eyebrows, lip color, spritzing on toner, the way they look at themselves in the mirror when they’ve finished. It isn’t so much about caring how others see them. It’s more about showing who they are, how they feel.
Saint Cosmetics is a new favorite of mine for so many reasons. They have an insane range of colours, so have you covered no matter what your colouring, mood or look. The products perform beautifully and have incredible staying-power. Even the packaging gets compliments from every one of my clients, and… I have a special place in my heart for Toronto companies!
I’m in LOVE with their shadow palettes, concealer, 24k Highlight and bold lip shades. The lipstick texture is creamy and lasts a looooong time. If you want a juicy texture, their glosses are perfect. Saint is a wonderful example of how far non-toxic beauty (and Canadian beauty) has come.
Just like your skin can get dry, so can your hair — and that goes for eyelashes and brows too. Add to that applying mascara, liner and shadow, using brow pencils and gels, plucking, curling and taking it all off every day. Even with natural, non-toxic products, eyebrows and lashes see some abuse. Enter: Plume Lash & Brow Enhancing Serum.
This Calgary-based brand makes their nourishing serum with all-natural ingredients, and has a slew of raving testimonies. I can give one of them. I’ve put my lashes through a lot, and I had a brow-plucking incident or two in the ‘90s. Within a few weeks of starting with Plume, I noticed a difference in my lashes and brows. (Reminds me: I need to reorder!)
By the way, if you use lash extensions, it’s time to break up. Hopefully you quit them before adding yours to the many lash-loss horror stories. Try Plume to help grow your natural lashes so you don’t even want extensions. If extensions have already taken their toll, try Plume to help with recovery.
